Description

Isoteric Games is a one-man indie game developer founded by, and consisting of, Galan Montgomery. Isoteric has released its first game, Timebomb, a mobile twitch-action game.

History

Early history

Isoteric Games can trace it's earliest origins to the late-1990s/early-2000s, when Galan Montgomery was trying to come up with a game company name. While flipping through a dictionary for ideas, Galan happened to stumble across the prefix "iso-", meaning "equal", and the word "esoteric", or secret knowledge. Portmanteauing them together resulted in "Isoteric", knowledge that is equally secret to everyone. It wasn't until years later that he realized he'd inadvertently made a Zelda reference.

Early games for Ludum Dare

The name sat for a decade and a half. Galan abandoned the idea of game development, only to have it reignited in August 2012, when he joined RVAGameJams, a meetup group based in Richmond, Virginia. They were hosting a Ludum Dare 24 meetup, and it was here that he made his first game, Antivirus. It wasn't much, but the gamedev bug hit. He has continued particpating in Ludum Dare ever since, with over a dozen games to his name. In December of 2015, during Ludum Dare 34, he made the original version of Timebomb. While it didn't win any awards, people enjoyed its simple mechanics and easy-to-play, hard-to-master nature.

Isoteric Games becomes real

Following the modest success of Timebomb, Galan decided he finally had a game worth releasing to the public, but it needed some work first. He spent the better part of the next year — when time allowed — polishing up Timebomb and presenting it at small venues, including Pixelfest and RVA Makerfest. With a game finally nearing release, it was time to dust off "Isoteric" and make a public debut.
